Description
Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Two-Color Slip Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and ribbed vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse in cobalt slip with a stylized slip-trailed foliate design resembling a heart. Handle terminals brushed with rare blue-green slip occasionally found on 18th century stoneware pieces from the Northeastern U.S. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Very nice condition. One rim chip. Two post-firing base chips, a glazed-over base chip, and minor base nicks. Two small surface chips and some small curved surface lines on side of jar. A few in-the-firing contact marks to surface, typical of pieces of this age and origin.
