Striking and detailed photograph of the great ships of the Pacific Fleet and myriad smaller craft. with eight airplanes flying overhead. The caption reads: "The Pacific Fleet at Monterey - Monterey Harbor is the only port in California that may be entered to safe anchorage in any weather." The Pacific Fleet arrived at Monterey on August 25th. 1919, and remain till the 31st. The event of the flag raising on the old custom house by Admiral H. Rodman, commemorating the flag raising by Commodore Sloat on the occupancy of California by the United States Navy in 1846 on August 25th, at 2 p.m., was a memorable feature of the entertainment, and was attended by many of the leading officials of this state.
The photographer, Anton Charles Heidrick, came to Monterey in 1907 with the Army as a musician with the First Cavalry from Fort Worth, Texas. In 1910 he bought himself out of the Army and started his new career as a photographer in Monterey. Heidrick was best known for his panoramic views taken with his No. 10 Cirkut panoramic camera. He lost his home and studio at 109 Lighthouse Ave. in the September 1924 oil tank fire.
