Description

Ethiopia, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved wooden triptych, painted in colorful tempera hues with depictions of Saint Abune Aregawi, one of the nine saints who came from Syria during the 6th century CE and is responsible for creating many churches and monasteries. A statement on a note accompanying this piece reads, "While wandering below a high cliff on which the saint wanted to reside, God commanded a snake living in the region to stretch down and lift up the holy man." Abune Aregawi wished to climb the amba (steep-sided mountain) so that he could build Debre Damo, the oldest existing Ethiopian church. In this composition, both side panels depict Abune Aregawi as a monk donning his brown habit, holding on to the serpent who has coiled his body around the saint's in order to lift him up. The central image depicts him as an elderly saint with a golden halo wrapped in feline coat with several wild cats below. Size: 6.5" L x 5" W (16.5 cm x 12.7 cm) when closed; 8.625" W (21.9 cm) opened

These side panels close to create 'doors' to the triptych that are finely carved with a decorative, stylized rope-like border and central panel featuring a four-leaf motif and painted a golden yellow. These doors are attached to the central section via old nails through leather 'hinges'. At the top center is an integral wooden suspension loop with a strand of old hide laced through it.

Saint Abune Aregawi is currently canonized by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, as well as by the Ethiopian Catholic Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Church. During the 18th century, Ethiopian artists were increasingly exposed to forms of expression from Europe, and diptychs and triptychs like this example became popular among the nobility. The paintings present a wide range of jewel-tone colors and a wonderful command of line. Somewhat similar to Byzantine icons in that the compositions boldly renounce perspective and press the figures close to the picture plane, the paintings also display an embrace of figural frontality.
