Description
STAMPED "MARION. VA.", VIRGINIA STONEWARE CREAM PITCHERS, LOT OF TWO, salt-glazed, approximately one-pint and one-quart capacities, both with glazed interiors. One stamped on front side at base "MARION, VA", the other with "CHOCTAW INDIAN / POTTERY / MADE" at base of back side. Likely Choctaw Indian Pottery Company in Marion, Virginia. Circa 1930. 5 3/8" and 6" H.
Both undamaged, one with minor flaws on rim and base from manufacturing.
Provenance: From a Shenandoah Valley private collector._x000D_

Correspondence with scholar and author Steven Compton reveals that Davis Brown (of Brown Brothers/Brown Pottery in Arden, North Carolina) built kilns for the Choctaw Indian Pottery Company in Marion, Virginia. The shop was owned by Rufus Outen (who also potted in South Carolina and North Carolina). Davis Brown made pitchers similar to these forms and his work may have influenced the wares made at the pottery shop.
