Description
Edward Ellsberg (1891-1983) Admiral, author. Commander Ellsbergis remembered for his daring exploits in raising vessels from the bottom of the sea. He was called on when difficult salvage operations were required. His first successful recovery, the raising of the submarine S-51 after it was sunk in a collision off Block Island in September 1925, earned him worldwide acclaim. Three years later he was summoned when another Navy submarine, the S-4, went to the bottom in a collision off Cape Cod. And in 1938, when the submarine Squalus was sunk off Portsmouth, N.H., several crew members were saved. 7 ¼” x 10 ½” autograph letter signed, personal stationery, October 15, 1963, to Jacob Bacal. “…I much appreciate your kind words respecting my naval work….” There is also an initialed post script.
