Description
Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu/Inca, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. 'Monkey see, monkey do.' A handsome bichrome mold-made stirrup vessel with a pair of embracing monkeys, gazing in opposite directions, sitting atop a cuboid base that is finely decorated with black striations and wave (or perhaps curled tail) motifs on its four faces. A miniature simian is perched upon the juncture between the handle and tall cylindrical spout. The iconography of this vessel is highly symbolic. Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and, at times, parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. Size: 7" W x 8.25" H (17.8 cm x 21 cm)
Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA; D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, ex Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, December 1999, Lot 450
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
