Description
Royal Order of El Rafidain, also known as the Order of the Two Rivers (Wisam al-Imtiaz-I-Rafidain), Commander with Swords: Magnificent seven-pointed red enamel ball-tipped star on gilt laurel wreath and neck ribbon suspension loop; the face overlain with a green and white pierced frieze of stylized Arabic geometric design with a central blue enamel medallion bearing the gilt Iraqi royal crown encircled by a white enamel ring inscribed ‘al-Mamlaka al-Iraqiah; Hub al-Watan min al-Iman’ (The Kingdom of Iraq; Love of the Motherland is Faith’); the reverse with a gilt inscribed central medallion encircled by a white inscribed enamel ring; a surface chip to the upper Center arm of the reverse, probably from wear; The Wisam al-Imtiaz-I-Rafidain, sometimes known as the Order of the Two Rivers (after the Tigris and Euphrates, the two great rivers of Iraq and cradle of ancient civilization), was founded by King Faisal I in 1922 and awarded for exceptional merit in both civilian and military versions. The Order continued to be awarded after Iraq became a republic in 1958 but with the crown replaced by an eagle and changes to the inscriptions. This example was made prior to 1958, probably by Garrard & Co. Ltd. of London, the then British Crown Jewelers
