Description
Standard glaze vase decorated with a portrait of Native American Chief Standing Bear, the work of Sturgis Laurence in 1900. Marks include the Rookwood logo, which indicates the date, shape 581 D, the artist's incised monogram and "Chief "Standing Bear", Ponca". There is faint overall crazing. Standing Bear successfully argued in U.S. District Court in 1879 in Omaha that Native Americans are "persons within the meaning of the law" and therefore have the right to habeas corpus. Height is 11 1/4 inches.
