Description
Egypt, pre-Dynastic period, Naqada Culture, probably Naqada I, ca. 4400 to 3500 BCE. This is a beautiful redware jar of ovoid form with a curved base and an unpronounced rim. The surface is a rich, burnished red with an oxidized black pigment in a thick band around the rim - black-topped ware is a mark of the Naqada I. This culture inhabited ancient Egypt in the pre-Dynastic period, and was first described by famous archaeologist William Flinders Petrie, but relatively little is known about it except that the civilization was focused around the site of El-Amra in central Egypt, west of the Nile. Size: 2.7" W x 9.3" H (6.9 cm x 23.6 cm)
