Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca / Quimbaya, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A characteristically abstract pottery figure, seated with extended tubular arms and legs - with arms raised to his sides and rendered fingers and toes. The visage presents incised slits for eyes and mouth, a long, protruding hooked nose with a tumbaga nose ring adorning it, perforations on the forehead presumably for adding gold, feather, or fabric ornaments, and signs of tattoos. The petite nipples near the armpits suggest that this is a figure of the female persuasion. Perforations through the abdominal area were created for suspension or attachment. Slab figures like this example were placed with burials in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased.
