Description
DESCRIPTION: Donald MacLaughlin (Massachusetts/Canada, 1876-1938). Two etchings on paper. Includes: 1) Etching with pair of draft horses. Signed lower right in pencil. 3-3/8" x 2-1/2". Overall with frame and mat 12-1/8" x 10-1/8". 2) Etching featuring a sunrise over mountains. Signed lower right in pencil. 8" x 3". Overall with frame and mat 17" x 12". Wooden frames with glass and mat. MacLaughlan first studied art in Boston under J. W. O. Hamilton. By 1898, however, he had settled in Paris to complete his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1901 two of his etchings were accepted by the Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and in 1903 he was elected an Associate of the Salon. Donald MacLaughlin is known for landscape, figure-genre painting, and graphics. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Dr. Beate A. Schiwek (1943-2016), Chambersburg, PA. Dr. Schiwek was the Dean and Chief Academic Officer at Felician College in Lodi, NJ, Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA and Rosemont College in Rosemont, PA. While at Felician, she became the first dean of a private college to serve as National President of the Council of Colleges at Arts & Sciences. MEASUREMENTS: See Description. CONDITION: Minor toning and undulation. Minor wear to frames. Sunrise with toning to mat.
