Large Colombian Quimbaya Pottery Slab Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A buff, flat pottery figure with tubular arms and legs. He is seated with one arm raised and one held close to his chest, with obvious male genitalia and finely rendered fingers and toes. Perforations along his forehead, in each ear, and through each palm may be indicative of decorative items like gold rings that once adorned this sculpture. Stylized figures like this one come from the Cauca River drainage, and are called slab figures. Most are male, like this one. These figures were included alongside vessels and metal ornaments in shaft and chamber tombs - perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 9.2" W x 11.6" H (23.4 cm x 29.5 cm)

Provenance: private Vaught collection, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
