Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Pre-Columbian, Quimbaya culture, Colombia, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A charming pottery flat slab figure with tubular arms and legs. He is seated with his arms resting on his knees, with obvious genitalia and finely rendered feet and toes. The face is a delight, upturned with slits for eyes and mouth and a prominent, bulbous nose with open nostrils; given the Quimbaya penchant for large gold ornaments, at one time this piece may have had gold through his nose and his pierced ears; the grooves around his wrists and upper arms may also be evidence for missing gold bands. Slab figures like this one were placed with burials in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 5.95" W x 7.3" H (15.1 cm x 18.5 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private collection of Dr. Saul Tuttman and Dr. Gregory Siskind, New York, USA
