Description
Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 1000 to 500 BCE. A hand-built redware pottery vessel, its finely designed form comprised of a bulbous body, slightly tiered at its upper end, leading to a tall cylindrical neck that slightly tapers to a narrow opening. The walls of the lower section are skillfully incised with striated and curvilinear motifs. Given its form, it is possible that this piece was used for hallucinogenic enema ceremonies, a practice that was popular among Pre-Columbian cultures. Adding to its visual appeal are the seemingly endless root marks and manganese deposits gracing the surface. Size: 8.125" in diameter x 11.25" H (20.6 cm x 28.6 cm)
Tlatilco artisans are also known for their unique figurines modeled in dynamic, lifelike poses, found in great quantities in their tombs. This culture was contemporary with the Olmec, but their artistic style was fairly distinct.
