Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with combed midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated top-to-bottom with a freehand vines and straight and wavy stripes, the base inscribed with a script "3". Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with the scarce maker's mark, "BOUGHNER GREENSBORO / PA", in which the initials "A & W" have been removed, likely employed shortly after Alexander Vance Boughner took sole ownership of the pottery. Strong decoration and desirable maker's mark. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Excellent condition with a flake to one handle terminal and a minor in-the-firing chip at base on reverse.
