Description
Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Alexander Vance Boughner, Greensboro, PA, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with combed midsection, tooled shoulder, and semi-squared rim, decorated on the upper half with freehand straight and wavy lines girding an undulating vine, and further decorated below with a freehand "2" flanked by leafy vines, between two groups of graduated dashes, along with freehand stripes above and below. Various elements of the design, as well as the jar's color, lead to a firm attribution to Alexander Vance Boughner. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Base broken and reglued with associated restoration.
