Contemp half leather and marbled board with “J. G. Palfrey” in gilt on spine. Signed on ffep by E. R. Hoar [Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, US Attorney General during the Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant]. Tipped in between the 4th-5th works is a 2-page ALS by Palfrey to S. Hoar, transmitting the volume. The recipient, Samuel Hoar, was a US Congressman and abolitionist. Samuel Hoar was also the father of Atty-General Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar and son in law of Roger Sherman, delegate to the Constitutional Convention and signer of the Declaration of Independence. ALS reads in full: “Cambridge, May 25th./ My dear Sir- I respectfully ask your acceptance of a few little memorials of my academic life. The article reprinted from the ‘Examiner’ though ostensibly a Review of my ? was written by me, it of course containing no critique of the Sermons. Were I ever to acknowledge the authorship of the letter of ‘an alumnus’ it would bring all the sects upon me pell-mell. Yours, and Sir, with the highest regards, John G.
