Description
1614 SENECA Stoic Philosophy Stoicism Latin Humanism Cologne ROME Aldine
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” ― Seneca
A rare mid-17th-century printing of the works of Seneca the Younger. While Seneca is mostly remembered for his full-length tragedies, his essays, dialogues, and letters offer a much better portrayal of Ancient Rome. While he was known for these works of fiction and prose, he was better known for his writings of Stoic philosophy in which he regards philosophy as the cures for most of life’s problems.
This 1614 Cologne edition, published by Crispin, follows the Plantin edition which includes the commentary of Lipsius, originally published in 1605 Antwerp. It became the most referenced edition throughout the 17th- and 18th-centuries!
According to Farnham,
“The printer’s mark has an anchor and a dolphin, with the motto: ‘Festina Tarde,’ in a medallion surrounded by cherubs and dolphins, evidently suggested by the mark of the Alduses.”
