Woodrow Wilson. 11 ½” x 14 ½” military appointment signed, Washington, February 25, 1920, the appointment of Andre W. Brewster as Brigadier General, counter signed by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. On October 2, 1919, Wilson suffered a serious stroke, leaving him paralyzed on his left side, along with blindness in his left eye and with only partial vision in the right eye. The signature on this appointment is labored. General Brewster, while a Captain with the 9th U.S Infantry, was awarded the Medal of Honor on September 15, 1903. He was a member of the Military Order of the Dragon, a military society of officers who served in the China Relief Expedition. During World War I, he served in France as Inspector General of General Headquarters, American Expeditionary Force.
