Description
Kakemono painting with ink on silk. Japan, 19th century
The immortal Chokaro is wearing a long Chinese robe and is sitting on a rock. He is holding a hyotan (bottle gourd) with both arms extended forwards, his mule has just emerged from the gourd and is flying in the sky. This Sennin, one of the Eight Immortals in China, would fly on a white mule. Finely wash-painted garment. The mule appears very lively. Inscription, signature and red seal to the left of Chokaro. Mounted with silk brocade, ivory jikusaki. Wooden box.
Condition: A tear to the right side, faded silk probably due to sun exposure and subtle crease folds are visible - overall good condition
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection
SIZE image 108 x 45.6 CM, SIZE mounting 201 x 60 CM
