Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early 20th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wooden ancestor figure. The figure has a simple body, with joined legs, no feet, a narrow torso, and arms hanging down to its waist. Two spikes rise from the shoulders. The head dominates the sculpture, large relative to its body, and is an elongated oval with two large, creamy white cowrie shells as eyes. The figure has two ears, each pierced through twice, perhaps to hold feathers or another decoration. The nose is classically Papuan, long, with curling nostrils, and the face is completed with an enigmatic smile. The body is painted a rich, dark brown organic pigment.
