Oceania/Polynesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful piece of Tapa bark cloth, called Siapo in the Samoan language, created from the inner bark of Mulberry or similar trees and adorned with a mesmerizing geometric design created via wood blocks. Tapa cloths are traditionally made by beating the inner bark of trees until it is soft and pliable. Every hand-made bark cloth has its own unique texture and coloring. People of various cultures have used bark cloths for clothing, draperies, as well as wall hangings. Size: 35" L x 49" W (88.9 cm x 124.5 cm)
