Description
This manuscript, dated 1811, is signed by the Governor General of Cuba, Salvador de Muro y Salazar, Marqués de Someruelos, and discusses a Royal Decree issued by the King of Spain on the Freedom of the Press, it states "printed examples are given" as they apply to articles of the Royal Decree; "notions that the public want to see" is what is put into practice; the decree elaborates on a Junta and that there should exist a "Junta of Censorship" to ensure the "Freedom of the Press." This piece reveals an interesting way in which the Spanish empire state attempted to control and censor public discourse in the name of "Freedom of the Press," not unlike today's hyperpartisan-charged political landscape.
