Description
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fabulous wheel-thrown miniature amphora with a petite discoid foot, a bulbous body with a slanted shoulder, a flared rim, and a pair of arching strap handles joining rim to body. A repeating register of orange-red linear and zigzag motifs are applied atop a lustrous black-glazed body, and faint areas of silvery iridescence provide a nice complementary color. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, and the style is distinguished by added red decoration over black glaze. A beautiful example from ancient Apulia! Size: 2.5" W x 2.375" H (6.4 cm x 6 cm).
