Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico / Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 100 to 900 CE. A wonderfully preserved ceramic cylinder vessel, fired to a dark brown, with three rectangular legs and an ornate, abstract motif of a standing lord that repeats in a wide band around the exterior body. Each leg features a highly abstract feathered face, perhaps representing the god Quetzalcoatl. When originally made, cinnabar may have been spread over the relief motifs to provide a reddish color. Tripod vessels are a classic form from Teotihuacan, "The Place of the Gods" as the city was known by the Aztecs (its true name is lost to history). Artisans in Teotihuacan had an enormous influence, both through widespread trade during their own time and the stylistic legacy they left to their descendant cultures. Size: 4.45" W x 6.15" H (11.3 cm x 15.6 cm)
