**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Roman Holy Land, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A lovely ensemble of five mold-made terracotta oil lamps from the Roman Holy Land. First is a simple lamp with a flat base, conical body, and a slight protruding wick spout. Second is a Romano-Egyptian lamp, dark gray in color, with an incised triangular base, prominent wick spout, and a small fill hole. Third is a red lamp with a footed base, linear-design shoulders, a curved wick spout, and two fin-shaped lateral handles. Fourth is another red lamp with a footed base and linear-designed shoulders, but with a phallic wick spout and only one lateral fin-shaped handle. Last is an ornate lamp with a ring base, petal-form shoulders, a concentric ring tondo, and an intricate wick spout. Simply wonderful! Size of largest (Romano-Egyptian): 3.25" L (8.3 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980

Condition
All lamps have surface wear commensurate with age and use, light char marks to wick spouts, small chips and nicks across exterior surfaces, with earthen and mineral deposits as well. Each lamp has an old inventory number either written on the base in black ink or on a sticker.
