Fantastic pieces of history for you to add to your Civil War collection. These portraits and one stereograph are relatives of John McAllister Schofield, Civil War General. General Schofield not only commanded during the Civil War, but also served under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant as the 28th US Secretary of War (1868-69) and Commanding General of of the US Army (1888-1895) under Presidents Grover Cleveland (twice) and Benjamin Harrison. The portraits are of General Schofield's cousin George Schofield and his wife Marie. Each photo has hand written information regarding who they are and their family line down to the last entry who passed in the 1990s. Starting with George Schofield, his reads "Geo Schofield Grandfather of Emma S. (illegible), 1st cousin of Gen Jhon (sic) M. Schofield of Civil War fame" also in what appears to be another person's penmanship is "George Schofield Father of Walter Schofield Grandfather of Emma S. Schofield Marsh (illegible) Great grandfather of Minnie May Marsh Torrey Great great grandfather of (illegible) Howard Torrey Neil Vernon Torrey (illegible) Great great great grandfather of Steven Howard Torey". Next is Marie Le Mott Schofield wife of Geo Schofield mother of 15 children Grandmother of Emma S (possibly) Grand" in different penmanship is as follows "Marie Le Mot Schofield wife of George Schofield Mother of Walter Schofield Grandmother of Emma S Schofield great grandmother of Minny May Marsh (and possibly) married name Great Great Grandmother of Gordon H Torrey Neil V. Torrey Great great great grandmother of Stephen Howard Torrey". These photos have not been removed from their oval frames. George's portrait is missing the glass, Marie's portrait does appear to have the original glass complete with air bubble. The paper on the back of the portraits is very fragile, and his paper has come torn away but will be included in a protective sleeve. The stereoview has a small tear where the paper has split from the actual image but does not affect the photo.
