Description
18th Century Hand Fan of Betty Washington Lewis, Sister of George Washington; this very fine hand fan is reported to have belonged to George Washington's sister Betty. The contributing estate has provided documentation stating "supposed to have been the property of Washington's sister, Betty". The Lewis home, Kenmore Plantation, Virginia has been contacted concerning this provenance and is researching. This documentation will be included with the sale of the object. This is a very fine example of an 18th century hand fan; the sticks are carved ivory showing a floral motif with hand-painted highlights. The leaf appears to be silk, hand-painted showing three vignettes; at the center is a garden scene showing two young ladies enjoying the music of a lute player. The bordering left and right vignettes show musical instruments. There are applied gold colored sequins. The painting is signed. This appears to be a French made fan, it is currently mounted in an unglazed shadow box. The fan is in good condition. It does show some areas of loss of the leaf material and some tears. Also, it is adhered to the back of a shadow box display. It is noted that even considering the condition issues, it shows very well, especially the center vignette. The fan measures 16" x 8" in the open position. The shadow box shows a gold colored frame and contrasting pink interior. It measures 19 1/4" x 12 3/4" H x 2 1/2" D. A picture light is attached.
