Description
Oil on canvas. 24 x 20 1/2 (framed), 18 x 15 in. (canvas). Frederick Barnard was primarily an illustrator and engraver in England but also did magazine and book illustration in New York City in the 1880s and 1890s for "Harper's Weekly" and Selmar Press. He is known primarily for his illustrations of Charles Dickens' characters, many of them published by Harper's. His training came from studying in Paris with Leon Bonnat and from working in London on magazines and papers including the "Illustrated London News" and "Punch". In 1870 he married Alice Faraday (1847-1952) whom John Singer Sargent painted in a portrait. Frederick died in a fire in 1896.
