**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala, ca. 400 to 100 BCE; Mexico, Guerrero, Mixtec culture, ca. 800 CE. A great collection of five hand-carved stone items. First are two Mezcala axe god figures, carved from a mottled gray stone with dark inclusions, one with a notable flat composition, and the other more well-rounded. Each figure has delineated limbs, heads, and brow lines formed using the meticulous string-cut technique, and both have attenuated legs and abstract heads. Second are three hand-carved stone pieces from the later Mixtec culture. One figure is a small axe god carved from a mottled green stone with dark-green inclusions with a drilled perforation near the neck; next is a gray standing figure with an abstract head, drilled eyes and mouth, and string-cut chest lines trailing to a thin base; last is a blocky head, carved from light-orange stone with emerald-green inclusions, with incised earspools and abstract facial features. Size of largest (thin Mezcala): 3.375" H (8.6 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Condition
All items have age-commensurate surface wear, small chips and nicks to exterior surfaces, fading to incised / string-cut features, with nice mineral deposits. Light-orange head is a fragment of a larger figure.
