[Civil War] Wilmer McLean ALS to Colonel John Hooe. June 3rd, 1844. Document by McLean listing goods purchased by Hooe from McLean's store. Includes linen, osnaburg, vest padding, rope, match safe, etc.. McLean (1814-1882) was a grocer from Virginia. His house near Manassas, Virginia, was involved in the First Battle of Bull Run (1861). After the battle he moved to Appomattox, Virginia, in an attempt to escape the war. Instead, in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's home in Appomattox. It is said that the Civil War started in his front yard and ended in his living room. A very rare signature. Approx: 7 1/2" x 5 1/3"
