Description
[Civil War] A document signed by Civil War General McPherson and his aide-de-camp giving permission for a confederate solider to cross lines just three days after the siege of Vicksburg. Framed: 13 3/4" x 10 3/4".
"Vicksburg July 7” 1863 / The Black Boy Servant to Lieu Mclean 41” Geo Regt has permission to go with his master through the lines / By order of / Maj genl / McPherson / G. S. Willard / Maj & a.d.c.". On reverse:
"From General John a Logan (1826-1886) / To his wife / Mary Simerson Cunningham / To her daughter Mary / Elizabeth Logan / To Mary Elizabeth Price/Hendry / To Owen B Robinson, husband of / Elizabeth Burton Hendry". Note: "(Owen had this identified (?), placed
in vellum & placed in this frame Behind conservation plate in 1993) General Logan was one of general McPherson’s most trusted “Lieutenants”. General McPherson was killed at Vicksburg about a week after This line / pass was issued. / Logan probably brought it home as a memory/memento. Logan distinguished himself at Vicksburg after McPherson’s death,) [...] Written by Owen B. Robinson. / (the husband of Elizabeth Burton Hendry (Robinson) the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Price Hendry)".
Condition Very good. Original document laid down on vellum and then framed. Not examined out of frame.
