Description
1742 Astronomy Galileo Telescope Illustrated Zodiac MAPS Optics Phoenicia Pluche
Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his land mark work of natural history ‘Spectacle of Nature’. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it ‘La physique des enfants’ or ‘physics of the children’. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, “We are here only to be virtuous” – a moral vision on how we are to live. ‘Spectacle’ became a pragmatic work of theology through the lens of plants, animals, and the natural world.
This volume from the complete set of ‘Spectacle’ includes many fascinating topics such as origins of naming America, Phoenicians and Greeks, ancient astronomy, constellation charts, effects of the moon on the earth, eclipses, planetary orbit, invention of the Zodiac, maps and voyaging the Mediterranean and the North Sea, invention and improvements to the microscope, mythological tales of the Argonauts, principles of alchemy, study of gnomonics, Galileo and telescope technology, and much, much more!
