Description
Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of four bronze seals: one accompanied by a typed and signed note by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27.5 x 35 x 13mm. This bears the shape of what is depicted. The face is flat and compartmented, and the back is flat also with loop of sheet metal for suspension. The design shows the face of a horned quadruped frontally, with drooping ears and stout horns, but with one big central eye. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design and in good condition.'; one roughly square shape with curved sides, design of circle to the centre, filled with stacked smaller circles, and circle to each quadrant, handle to the reverse; one formed as four circular spirals, to the other side a bird to each corner and an inverted V-shape handle to the centre; one roughly discoid with openwork design, diamond-shape handle to the reverse. 89 grams total, 31-45mm (1-1 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers V-948, Z-269, Y-267, W-661, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
