Description
Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze seals with various shapes and designs, including three accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-238) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 21 x 19mm. This has a round flat face and slightly convex back with a stalk handle in the middle surmounted with a pierced loop. The design is done in raised lines and consists of four semi-circles design is done in raised lines and consists of four semi-circles based on an outer rim, one of which has a straight stroke branching off from it at an irregular angle. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is in quite good condition and a nice example of its type.'; (R-773) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22.5 x 22 x 18.5mm. This has a round flat face and convex back on which a stalk handle ends in a rounded pierced top. The design on the face is a linear pattern, a kind of elaborate trefoil with three lines starting from the centre and becoming spirals with back-turning added strokes stretching to the outer edge. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is incrustation on the back, which could be removed, and the piece is generally in good condition.'; (D-43) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 30 x 27 x 16mm. This was originally oval, almost round, and is both open work and compartmented. There is a large loop handle mounted on the back like an inverted V. The design consists of four heart-shaped figures and the intervening spaces. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. it is in fair condition.' 98 grams total, 19-30mm (3/4-1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers R-773, U-238, D-43, U-293, W-473, W-184, Y-865, V-778, U-569, W-192, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
