c. 1776 Collection of Five British 40th Regiment of Foot Pewter Coat and Vest Buttons Excavated from New York
1776 American Revolutionary War, Collection of Five (5) British 40th Regiment of Foot, Coat and Vest Pewter Buttons, excavated from New York, Good to Fine.
British 40th Regiment of Foot, Collection of Five (5) American Revolutionary War Period Pewter Buttons. The Two (2) Larger size buttons measure about 7/8 inch in diameter and lack full shanks, a type that would be used for a coat. The Three (3) Smaller size buttons would be used for a vest and measure about 5/8 inch in diameter, of which only one has its full straight original shank, the other two do not. Designs as seen illustrated in "Military Buttons of the American Revolution" page 48, listed as types B40.e and f. All were said to have been found in Upstate New York and display wear from age and use in the field. The 40th Regiment of Foot first landed in Boston in June of 1775. They participated in a number of major engagements including New York and Princeton in 1776, Philadelphia, Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown, later participated in the New London raid and Fort Griswold in Groton, Connecticut. An unusual large and useful group, the button with its shank is particularly rare as such. (5 buttons)
