Description
A fine pewter bowl recovered from the wreck of the HMS WILLIAM. The bowl measures 5 1/2" across the top, and bears the name of the vessel "HMS WILLIAM" in stamped letters with a broad arrow mark between indicating British military property. Fine condition. The WILLIAM was 99 feet long with a beam of 29 feet, purchased in April, 1798 as an "armed vessel". She was wrecked on Nov. 11, 1807 in the Strait of Canso in Nova Scotia. The strait divides the Nova Scotia peninsula from Cape Breton Island. It is a long thin channel approximately 27 kilometers long and averaging three kilometers wide.
