Description
Andrews, H. C. THE BOTANIST'S REPOSITORY, COMPRISING COLOUR'D ENGRAVINGS OF NEW AND RARE PLANTS… BOTANICAL DESCRIPTIONS IN LATIN AND ENGLISH AFTER THE LINNAEAN SYSTEM. [London: Bensley, ca. 1803-1815]. Volumes 5–10 (of 10). 11" x 8.25". Containing plates 289–664 (or 376 hand-colored plates total, complete as per list, and including over 50 folding), each plate with accompanying text leaf, engraved titles and indexes to each volume, and final volume with lengthy index "Review of the Plants," letterpress titles discarded (as often.) Nicely bound in later 1/2 morocco over marbled boards, some light scuffs and chips. Occasional minor foxing, toning, or off-setting; some light pencil notes/corrections to some leaves. In all, rather clean and attractive examples of these volumes. Very Good. ******************** FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXQUISITE COLLECTION OF HAND-COLORED BOTANICAL ENGRAVED PLATES. The work "made a contribution of lasting importance to the literature of botany and horticulture by providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them new to science." – (Hunt) The Botanist's Repository was a rival to the Botanical Magazine, and the Repository's larger format plates allowed for better botanical accuracy.
