Description
WATKINS TASKER: (1918-2007) Welsh Major, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Barfour, Normandy on 16th August 1944 during World War II. Watkins later served as Lord Justice of Appeal 1980-93 and Deputy Chief Justice of England & Wales 1988-93. A.L.S., Tasker Watkins, two pages, 8vo, Temple, London, 17th February 1968, to Mr. Armstrong. Watkins apologises for the delay in replying to his correspondent ('a busy professional life has kept me away from pleasant personal tasks such as this') and continues 'In making their study of the ''British Army'' your children, as I am sure they appreciate, gaze upon one of the great institutions which has helped to create and then preserve an Empire and, what is as important, the essential freedoms which have been handed down untarnished from generation to generation of British people over many centuries', further adding 'This Army has not only been usually victorious in battle, but, in peace, a civilising influence wherever it has been stationed' and reflecting 'It was my good fortune to belong to it for almost 7 years of war. The experience taught me much about men and, above all, about self discipline. I cherish the memory of it all.' In concluding Watkins wishes the children well in their studies. A letter of good content. VG
