Lot of Important Civil War Letters from Brevet Major General Peleg Peckham who was killed at Petersburg 4/2/1865 a week before the war ended to Colonel David R. Kenyon both from Rhode Island, containing 14 individual letters describing personal events and military requests between friends when Peckham was a Lt. These letters date from 4/14/1863 until 8/16/1864 and the content is incredible. They begin with Peckham asking Kenyon to get him a Captains commission and to speak with the Governor, he makes this request and even states he will pay Kenyon handsomely (Bribe) and pay the state representative as well who is Kenyons brother in almost all of the letters. Peckham speaks of the girls in Kentucky being very affectionate to the Yankees and going to county dances with the girls, Collecting money $10.00 for Kenyon, Hooker got whipped and did a bad job, Peckham now wants a Major or Lt. Colonel commission and will pay for it, 9th New Hampshire has small pox in camp, Battles and marching, Drag a cannon uphill, 5 weeks pay fined for being drunk, Appointment of officers, Being on the steamer David Tatum, Negros in Contraband Camps and not having white officers their not being brave and getting shot down, Women and children dying, 12th R.I. Reg being cowards and receiving a parade when they got home, Wife sad when he went home on leave, Appointment to Capt so he does not have to march anymore, No sleep while fighting Longstreet, 7th R.I. Reg is demoralized, Uses N-word to get $14.00 a month as an officer, No letter from his old friend Kenyon, Mud in Kentucky is like butter when walking, Huge forests of Trees that are being cut to make camps a steam mill cutting a 1000 feet of wood an hour, A Court Martial, and the last 8 sided letter describes the complete Battle of the Crater in detail with over 7000 Negros fighting and it being a disaster from the mine explosion to the end and how Burnside was released of duty. Also included are several transcribed letters that are no long present that are lost.
