Description
(1862 – 1936) British major general, recipient of the Victoria Cross, served in World War I and was captured after the Siege of Kut. While commanding forces in East Africa in 1903 he was severely mauled by a lion. S.P., 9 x 11 in. b/w, featuring a near full-length view of the general in uniform, signed ‘C.J. Melliss’ at the bottom left margin. The medal ribbon seen on his right breast is the Royal Humane Society medal given for rendering first aid to persons near drowned. Melliss received this medal for diving into shark infested waters to rescue a fallen sailor. The photo has been mounted to sturdy stock. Fine.
