Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery musician shown in a seated pose while playing a large drum held in the lap. The drummer wears a thick bangle on each arm, a necklace beneath a chinstrap, discoid earrings, and an enormous helmet shaped like a tall flower. A downward-facing medallion behind the head features a petite whistle mouthpiece and a tone hole that creates a high-pitched sound. Size: 3.25" W x 4.875" H (8.3 cm x 12.4 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex S. and V. Friedman collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s

Condition
Minor abrasions and nicks to body, head, and drum, with stable pressure fissures behind drum, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and preservation to overall form.
