Description
Joseph Romuald Bernier, carving, an articulated songbird on wire legs, mounted on a stylized frog shaped base. All in original crackled polychrome surface. The bird has a metal pick in its beak to pick up matches or toothpicks from the bowl, as the bird is tipped forward. Excellent state of preservation, original patina. Ex Emily LeBaron collection; ex Nettie Sharpe collection. Illustrated: Celebrating Canada, page 102. H: 5"; L: 6"; D: 2". In the 1880s, Bernier emigrated from Quebec to the U.S. with his parents to seek work in a Maine lumber camp and remained carving there after his retirement and eventually gained fame as the Saco-Biddeford carver. // Joseph Romuald Bernier, sculpture, un oiseau chanteur articulé, posé sur un socle stylisé en forme de grenouille, pattes en métal. Surface polychrome d’origine craquelée, superbe patine. Pointe de bec métallique permettant à l’oiseau de saisir allumette ou cure-dents dans le bol devant lui, quand on le fait basculer. Très bien préservé. Ancienne collection d’Emily LeBaron et ancienne collection de Nettie Sharpe. Illustré dans Le Canada chez soi, p. 102. H: 5po L: 6po D: 2po. Dans les années 1880, Bernier quitta le Québec pour les É.-U. avec ses parents pour chercher du travail dans un camp de bûcherons du Maine ou il devint célèbre sous le nom du Saco-Biddeford carver.
