Item Details
Description
Dimensions: 12-1/4" H x 7-5/8" Dia. Stand: 1-1/2" H

Chinese Qing Dynasty Qianlong Double gourd celadon vase. Potted in a shape of double gourd resemblance, with two bulbous bellies conjoined together, suspending a tall cylindrical neck, bulbous lower section finishing into a slender bottleneck at the top, with a narrow opening. The exterior masterfully covered in an even coat of a green celadon glaze which terminates at the base to reveal the pure white underglaze. The celadon glaze creates a mottled effect around the rim which is likened unto the blushing of human skin. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the receded central interior base left white underglaze. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the underglaze deep green concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep green. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. In China, the double-gourd or bottle-gourd, Hulu, has traditionally provided a very popular form for vases and ewers. In addition to their attractive shape, bottle-gourds are associated with a number of different auspicious wishes. Because natural gourds have many seeds, they have been regarded as symbols of extensive progeny. Indeed, one of their attributes is believed to be bringing hundreds of sons, Hulu baizi. The pronunciation of the Chinese word for bottle-gourd varies in different parts of China, and in some areas it is close to Fulu - Fu being blessings, and lu being an official salary - hence it is associated with good fortune and wealth. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.

Mark on under base, a six underglaze blue script characters reign mark, Qianlong Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
