Remarkable Virginia Slave Document, 1864

Item Details

Description

Original handwritten petition to the presiding judge at Petersburg, VA, May 1864, with the judge's decision and a bond issued as a result: a master appeals for the return of a slave, Elvira, who was convicted ofattempting to poison him and his family and ordered to be sent out of the state. The master asserts that because the decision of the five judges was split, the conviction and sentence was not legal. The judge concurred and the master posted bond of $100, "lawful money of Virginia."
