Item Details
Description
AN ANTIQUE CELESTIAL MAP, "Astronomia Comparativa," NUREMBERG, 1735-1742, hand colored engraving on paper, a page fragment from Atlas Coelestis, plate 30, printed by Homann Heirs, a third generation of the original Johann Homann(1664-1724) publishing house, after works presented by astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750) for scientific publication by the academic society Academiae Caesareae Leopoldino-Carolinae Naturae Curiosorum, showing the movements of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Earth according to Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), who combined Copernican and Ptolemaic astronomical systems in his noble and scientific pursuit of the explanation of the universe through observed data, with a figural vignette of the God of the universe looking through a telescope while surrounded by winged personifications of stars and a standing figure of death with a sickle among the cloud filled heavens. 19 1/2" x 22 1/2" Note: A courtesy translation of the central quotation, "He handed over the sacred canon-at the same time the nature of things: She does not promiscuously interact, even though all the secrets are open to her; knowledge will be reduced in the interior of the chapel and pent up in a plurality of actions, and through the age of time, all the things that shall come after us therefore envoy before us; she that is. When therefore, they are the result of course-this great task for the innocent to slowly lead us out of the darkened cellar of unknowing into our freedom." Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
Condition
Some handling creases, joined paper as issued, apparent old restoration, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
