AN ANTIQUE CELESTIAL MAP, "Phænomena Motuum Irregularium quos Planetar inferiores Venus et Mercurius ad annum Salutis MDCCX," NUREMBERG, 1716-1724, hand colored engraving on paper, a page fragment from Atlas Coelestis, plate number 7, after Johann Homann (1664-1724) and after works presented by astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750), showing heliocentric motions of the inferior planets Mercury and Venus during the year 1710, with two diagrams depicting the transit of Mercury across the Sun on November 5, 1710 and the predicted transit of Venus across the Sun on June 6, 1761 demonstrated through Copernican mathematical theories, a figural vignette of a queen of the sky pulled by six horses emitting rain, hail, lightning and snow from her clouds, above her a figure of Zeus/Jupiter commanding over Hermes/Mercury and Aphrodite/Venus, surmounted by a Leo, Cancer and other zodiac symbols; first published in Homann’s Atlas von hundert Charten, 1712 and reprinted in his Grossen Atlas, 1716, a blind stamp of the letter "N." 22 1/2" x 19 1/2" Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
Condition
Some fading of water color, handling creasing, a tear at center, joined as issued, some toning, and old stains, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
