Webb Alexander

Alexander S. Webb, Union General & Medal of Honor Recipient for Heroism at Gettysburg

A photographic print of Alexander S. Webb (1835-1911) signed by him as "Alex. S. Webb" along the bottom. Also inscribed in his hand as "Brt Maj Genl / U.S. Army" on the gray mat also dated 1868. The portrait of Webb in military uniform is displayed behind glass in a gray-painted plaster and wood frame with foliate decoration. Frame stamp verso. Not examined out of frame. The frame shows some wear, including an area of loss to the lower left corner. The sight size of the photo is 3.875" x 5.5" while the frame size is 10.75" x 12.75" x .5".

Alexander S. Webb, who graduated from West Point in 1855, garnered his first military experience in the Seminole War. During the Civil War, he served in critical administrative roles such as aide-de-camp, chief of staff, and assistant inspector general, but he also excelled in battlefield command. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), both at Cemetery Ridge on July 2nd, and by repulsing Pickett's Charge on July 3rd. In recognition of his bravery, Webb was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1891. Webb was promoted to the rank of brevet major general of the regular army after March 1867. After retiring in 1870 with the permanent rank of lieutenant colonel, Webb served as the longtime president of the City College of New York.
