1p autograph letter signed by then U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869) as "Edwin M Stanton" at lower right. Within the body of the letter, Stanton refers to his wife "Mrs Stanton", which can also be considered as a partial signature. Written in Boston, Massachusetts on September 16, 1865. On watermarked cream laid paper with a blind embossed Gothic letter at top. The paper was once bifold but is now a single sheet. Expected paper folds and light ink ghost impressions, else very good. 5" x 8".

In full:

"Boston 16 Sept 65

My Dear Sir

I beg you give the enclosed note to your Sisters. We came here day before yesterday and have the intense heat dust and tumult of Boston instead of the pleasant quiet shade of the Highlands. But life is made up of contrasts and changes. Mrs Stanton begs you to accept her Kindest regards + I am as ever

Truly, Yours

Edwin M Stanton

Edward Minturn Esqr".

Edwin M. Stanton served as U.S. Secretary of War from 1862-1868 during the Lincoln and Johnson administrations. Stanton disapproved of President Johnson's leniency towards former Confederate states following the end of the Civil War, leading to his dismissal by presidential mandate on February 21, 1868. Stanton's refusal to leave office--and the subsequent support of the U.S. Senate--led to President Johnson's impeachment in the spring of 1868. Stanton resigned in May 1868 after President Johnson was acquitted. Of the professional upheaval, Stanton may have said, "…Life is made up of contrasts and changes."
