Abraham Lincoln, Edwin M. Stanton, and the Adams Family

In this interesting 3-piece lot, Charles F. Adams serves as the linchpin connecting three separate documents, two of which also relate to Abraham Lincoln. Charles F. Adams, son of President John Quincy Adams and grandson of President John Adams, pens a letter about President Lincoln's problems with the Senate. Edwin M. Stanton, Lincoln's Secretary of War, signs a war document for volunteers in 1863, while Charles F. Adams, then serving as U.S. envoy, dissuaded the British to acknowledge the Confederacy. Last, Charles F. Adams's father John Quincy Adams runs for governor of Massachusetts in 1833.

The lot is comprised of:

1. Civil War dated 2pp ALS fully engrossed and signed by Charles F. Adams (1807-1886) as "C.F. Adams" near the bottom of the second page. Written in London on April 24, 1864, and addressed to his cousin Miss E.C. Adams. With expected paper folds, else near fine. 8vo. Accompanied by a full typewritten transcription.

In this letter, Adams complains that he has not yet been released from his post as U.S. Envoy to the United Kingdom, and predicts that the current political atmosphere "between the President and the Senate" will attenuate his term. Adams's term finally ended in May 1868.

2. Civil War dated 1p "War Department" memorandum signed by U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869) as "Edwin M Stanton" at bottom. The document informed Captain Francis A. Dohrman of his promotion and his appointment as "Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers." Horizontal splits need repair. Overall toning. Else near fine.

3. A printed broadside, ca. 1833, advocating for candidates of the Anti-Masonic Party, including John Quincy Adams for Governor of Massachusetts. Minor edge darkening and some reversible pencil inscriptions, else near fine.

John Quincy Adams lost the 1833 Massachusetts gubernatorial election, ceding it to Whig Party candidate John Davis. The ex-president came in second place, with 29% of the popular vote.
